Foundations is the starting point.
GROW™ Foundations introduces a structured way to look beneath observable behaviour and consider what a person may be communicating, experiencing, needing or navigating. The course provides shared language and practical tools that can be used at home, in education, disability support and professional practice.
You will begin to:
-
Understand behaviour as communication rather than a problem to control;
-
recognise identity, sensory, emotional, relational and environmental influences;
-
notice communication differences and access needs;
-
consider changes around the person;
-
describe the four GROW™ pillars to others.
The Four Pillars of GROW™

Neurodivergent individuals deserve environments where they feel:
-
safe,
-
respected,
-
valued,
-
and able to participate authentically.
This pillar recognises the importance of:
-
identity,
-
autonomy,
-
dignity,
-
strengths,
-
and belonging.
GROW™ encourages practitioners to move away from approaches that prioritise masking or “normalising” behaviour and instead support authentic participation and wellbeing.

Behaviour makes sense in context.
This pillar focuses on understanding behaviour through:
-
nervous systems,
-
regulation,
-
sensory experiences,
-
emotional safety,
-
unmet needs,
-
and environmental demands.
Rather than asking:
“How do we stop the behaviour?”
GROW™ reframes practice toward:
“What is this person experiencing, communicating, needing, or navigating?”

All behaviour communicates something.
This pillar supports practitioners to:
-
recognise diverse communication styles,
-
reduce assumptions,
-
strengthen accessibility,
-
and build collaborative communication environments.
GROW™ encourages curiosity, reflection, and understanding over judgement and interpretation based solely on external behaviour.

Behaviour does not occur in isolation.
This pillar recognises the impact of:
-
relationships,
-
environments,
-
expectations,
-
systems,
-
trauma,
-
participation barriers,
-
and social context.
Sustainable support requires more than changing the individual — it requires responsive environments and shared responsibility across the broader support system.
