What Is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is about understanding the reason behind behaviours — not trying to “fix” them. We work with families, schools, and the wider team to create strategies that support your child’s wellbeing, communication, and inclusion.

At Grow Therapy Services, PBS looks a little different. Instead of weekly child sessions, our practitioners take a whole-system approach — partnering with families, schools, and other therapists to make meaningful, lasting change.

What to Expect When Working with a Neuroaffirming PBS Practitioner

1. Getting to Know Your Child

2-4 Weeks

We start with interviews, questionnaires, and (where possible) observations. This stage is all about understanding your child’s interests, sensory preferences, communication style, and everyday environment. We also take time to hear your story — what’s working, what’s tricky, and what you’d like to change.
This early stage can include contact with school or other therapists, so it may take a few weeks to gather everything we need before moving ahead.

2. Looking Beneath the Behaviour

4 - 6 weeks

Rather than asking “How can we stop this?”, we explore “What’s this behaviour communicating?” This phase is about analysis and reflection — identifying patterns, triggers, and unmet needs across different settings.
Your PBS practitioner will start forming ideas about what supports will make the biggest difference. Sometimes this involves a mix of parent meetings, data collection, and strategy testing.

3. Creating a Personalised Plan

2 - 3 weeks

Once we’ve understood the “why,” your practitioner will develop a comprehensive plan that’s practical and tailored to your child and family.
It includes clear strategies, visuals, and recommendations — not just for you, but for anyone supporting your child (school staff, other therapists, family members). We’ll then meet to talk through the plan together so you feel confident using it day-to-day.

4. Ongoing Coaching and Support

every few weeks or as needed

Unlike other therapies, PBS doesn’t usually involve weekly sessions with your child. Instead, your practitioner will check in regularly with you — every few weeks or months — to model strategies, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust supports as things change.
The goal is to help you feel empowered and equipped to create consistent, positive changes across all areas of your child’s life.

Every family’s journey looks a little different. We’ll walk alongside you at a pace that feels right, with regular communication, check-ins, and flexible options that fit your child’s needs.

Our Approach: The GROWâ„¢ Framework

Our Work is Guided by the GROWâ„¢ Framework

GROW =
G – Grounded in Identity:We support positive self-understanding and celebrate neurodivergent ways of being.
R – Responsive to Needs:All behaviour has meaning. We help you uncover the unmet physical, sensory, emotional, or relational needs behind the behaviour.
O – Open to Communication Differences:We honour all forms of communication — movement, scripting, shutdowns, AAC, or silence.
W – Whole-Person, Whole-System Lens:Behaviour doesn’t happen in isolation. We consider sensory environments, trauma history, family dynamics, and systemic factors.
