Neuroaffirming Positive Behaviour Support
Understanding Behaviour Through Identity, Needs, Communication & Whole-System Context
At Grow Therapy Services, Positive Behaviour Support is about far more than reducing behaviours.
We believe behaviour makes sense in context.
Every behaviour communicates something about a person's experience, needs, environment, communication, sensory profile, relationships, or nervous system.
Rather than asking:
"How do we stop the behaviour?"
we ask:
"What is this person experiencing, communicating, needing, or navigating?"
Our approach is grounded in the GROW™ Neuroaffirming Behaviour Framework and supports children, young people, adults, families, schools, and support teams to better understand behaviour through the lens of identity, regulation, communication, and whole-person wellbeing.

What Is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-informed approach that aims to improve quality of life by understanding the reasons behind behaviours and creating supportive environments that reduce distress and increase participation. Functional Behaviour Assessment forms a key part of this process.
Under the NDIS, Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners work with participants, families, educators, therapists, and support teams to understand:
-
what behaviour may be communicating,
-
factors contributing to distress,
-
risks impacting safety and wellbeing,
-
environmental influences,
-
support needs,
-
and strategies that improve quality of life and participation.
PBS is not about controlling people.
At its best, PBS is about creating environments where individuals feel safe, understood, supported, and able to thrive.
Our Difference
Beyond Behaviour Management

Many traditional approaches focus on managing behaviour once it occurs.
Our approach focuses on understanding why.
We explore:
-
sensory processing differences,
-
communication differences,
-
nervous system responses,
-
environmental demands,
-
unmet needs,
-
relationships,
-
participation barriers,
-
identity and belonging,
-
and broader system influences.
Because behaviour does not happen in isolation.
Our Approach: The GROW™ Framework
Grounded in the GROW™ Framework
Our PBS services are delivered through the GROW™ Neuroaffirming Behaviour Framework.
This framework helps us understand behaviour through four interconnected lenses:

G — Grounded in Identity
Supporting dignity, autonomy, strengths, and authentic participation.
R — Responsive to Needs
Understanding nervous systems, regulation, sensory experiences, and unmet needs.
O — Open to Communication
Recognising behaviour as communication and strengthening understanding across environments.
W — Whole-Person, Whole-System Lens
Considering the impact of relationships, environments, expectations, systems, trauma, and participation.
This allows us to move beyond surface-level behaviour responses and develop support strategies that are practical, meaningful, and sustainable.

What Does a PBS Practitioner Do?
Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners are funded under a separate NDIS support category because their role is different to other therapy disciplines.
Our role includes:
Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)
We work to understand:
-
what behaviours are occurring,
-
when and where they occur,
-
contributing factors,
-
possible functions of behaviour,
-
environmental influences,
-
and support needs.
Behaviour Support Plans
We develop practical, person-centred plans that support:
-
safety,
-
wellbeing,
-
communication,
-
regulation,
-
participation,
-
and quality of life.
Plans are designed to be used by the people who support the participant every day.
Family & Team Capacity Building
We help families, educators, support workers, and therapy teams better understand:
-
behaviour,
-
communication,
-
regulation,
-
sensory needs,
-
environmental supports,
-
and effective support strategies.
Because sustainable outcomes require shared understanding across the support network.
Restrictive Practice Reduction & Monitoring
Where restrictive practices are being used, we support teams to:
-
understand underlying needs,
-
develop alternative supports,
-
meet NDIS requirements,
-
and work toward reducing reliance on restrictive interventions.
Ongoing Monitoring & Reporting
PBS is an ongoing process.
We regularly review:
-
progress,
-
risks,
-
implementation,
-
outcomes,
-
and changing support needs
to ensure recommendations remain relevant and effective.
